How Kovo Credit evaluates 1099 and small-business income.

Self-employed income doesn't come on a W-2 — but it's still income, and the Kovo Credit partner lender network is set up to evaluate it fairly. Here's what to prepare and what to expect.

What counts as self-employment income

What Kovo Credit partner lenders typically ask for

  1. Two years of tax returns (Schedule C or Schedule E), or at least one year plus other verification
  2. Three months of business bank statements
  3. 1099 forms from major payers (for contractors)
  4. A government-issued ID and address verification
  5. Sometimes a CPA letter for larger loan amounts

Not every lender requires every document — the pre-qualification flow will show what's needed for your specific offer.

What hurts self-employed borrowers (and how to compensate)

What helps self-employed borrowers

Pre-qualifying as self-employed

Start the Kovo Credit pre-qualification the same way any borrower would. In the "employment" section, select "Self-employed" or "1099 contractor" (not "unemployed"). The flow will prompt for appropriate verification documents only if you move to a formal offer. Pre-qualification itself is still a soft inquiry.

A note on documentation

Kovo Credit never asks for passwords to your bank accounts. Verification can be done via secure document upload, read-only bank integration (such as Plaid), or by emailing PDFs through our secure portal.

Self-employment makes paperwork more work — but it doesn't shut you out of mainstream lending. Clean records and separate accounts are 80% of the battle.
