Payment History Is 35% of Your FICO® — Here's Why It Matters So Much

The one factor that outweighs everything else combined.

In the FICO® scoring model, payment history is 35% of your score — more than utilization, length of history, credit mix, and new credit combined. In the VantageScore® model, payment history weighs roughly 40%. If you optimize for one thing, optimize for this.

What counts as "payment history"

Payment history isn't a single number. It's a stack of data points covering every account on your credit report:

The scoring models weight recency heavily. A 60-day late payment three months ago hurts far more than a 60-day late payment five years ago.

How much one late payment actually costs

On a prime file (720+), a single 30-day late payment can drop your score by 60–110 points. On a sub-prime file, the drop is smaller in absolute terms but still painful. Later-than-30-day latenesses — 60, 90, 120 — each cause progressively larger damage.

This is why a single missed payment on a credit-builder product can erase months of positive reporting. The arithmetic of credit scoring is deeply asymmetric: good months add slowly, bad months subtract fast.

How long late-payment damage lasts

How to protect payment history

  1. Auto-pay everything. The number-one cause of late payments isn't inability to pay — it's forgetting. Auto-pay removes forgetting.
  2. Keep a one-month cushion. If your checking account has one minimum payment's worth of cushion, a slow paycheck doesn't become a late payment.
  3. Call before you miss, not after. Many lenders offer hardship accommodations that keep the account from reporting late — but only if you call before the 30-day window closes.
  4. Monitor your credit report monthly. Occasionally a lender mis-reports. The sooner you spot it, the easier the dispute.

How the Kovo Credit Builder protects payment history

The Kovo Credit Builder is built around payment history as a feature. The monthly amount is fixed and transparent. Auto-pay is one tap to set up. There's no late fee on the first missed payment, and the system sends reminders inside the 10-day grace window to prevent credit-reporting consequences. The whole product is designed to protect the one factor that matters most.

"If I could only tell someone one credit tip, it would be: pay every bill on time, every month, no exceptions. That one habit outweighs every clever optimization." — Marcus Delaney, CFEI®
