Credit Utilization Explained — Beyond the 30% Myth

What utilization is, how it's calculated, and the real optimization rules.

Credit utilization is 30% of your FICO® score and roughly 20% of your VantageScore®. It's the second-largest factor after payment history, and the one you have the most direct day-to-day control over — if you know what the scoring models actually look at.

What credit utilization is

Credit utilization is the percentage of your available revolving credit (credit cards, lines of credit) that you're using at any given reporting moment. If you have a $5,000 card limit and a $500 balance reported, your utilization on that card is 10%.

There are two numbers that matter:

Scoring models look at both.

The 30% rule is a floor, not a goal

You've seen it everywhere: "keep utilization under 30%." That rule exists because 30% is roughly where utilization stops actively hurting your score. It is not where utilization starts helping.

Looking at FICO®'s own high-score data, elite credit files (780+) typically carry overall utilization under 10%, with no single card over 30%. That's the real target.

The reporting-date trick

Here's the single highest-leverage utilization tactic: your utilization isn't measured on your due date — it's measured on your statement closing date, which is when your card issuer sends the balance to the bureaus.

If you pay your balance to zero (or near-zero) before the statement closes, your reported utilization on that card drops to near 0% that month, even though you're using the card normally.

Members who do this consistently see utilization-driven score bumps of 15–40 points within one or two reporting cycles.

What installment accounts contribute

Installment accounts like the Kovo Credit Builder or an auto loan don't count toward revolving utilization. They have their own small factor (how much of the original loan is left), but it's much lower-weight than revolving utilization and doesn't need the same month-to-month management.

The 30% rule keeps you out of the penalty box. Living under 10% is what builds a 780 score.
